Christoval River Village
On the edge of the Hill Country and the Sonoran desert lies Christoval, a small unincorporated village of around 400 residents. Barely a 20 minute drive from San Angelo, Christoval is a historic town best known for its mineral bath houses and river recreation.
As an early wellness and spiritual retreat, the families of wealthy ranchers, those thirsty for spiritual and cultural renewal, along with cowboys and their herds came to Christoval in droves in the 1920’s. At the same time, Christoval was home to the first art colony in Texas, attracting 100’s of artists painting scenes beside the beautiful South Concho River until the group transitioned to become
the San Angelo Art Club. Also starting in the 1920’s, a Baptist Encampment was in full swing each Summer attracting many thousands who came to worship and cool
off in the spring waters flowing North into San Angelo.
Also on the edge, is Christoval’s rebirth as it begins to take on a new look and spirit. Being a community with no city government nor tax base from which to pull, a base of motivated retirees and visionary 40-somethings are partnering with
the San Angelo Museum Fine Art, Angelo State University, County officials and others who realize the uniqueness of Christoval. Citizens are shouldering the burden to bring art back to Christoval, beautify Main St. and the parks, and to rebuild this river village as a destination.
Even while changes to the community are being planned and executed, Christoval is worth a drive from anywhere in Texas due to its unique features. Day and weekend guests will find a number of unusual places to visit. Among these favorite sites are City Park at the South end of Main Street, a reunion site for
Confederate and Union soldiers following the Civil War and the River Park,
on the edge of town out Toenail Trail.
While in a state of construction in some areas, the River Park aka “Pugh Park”, is a favorite among campers, paddlers and anglers. The South Concho River flows North, through the town at the River Park, a 54-acre stretch of land that follows along the river. There are massive Live Oak Trees dotting the banks along with picnic tables. This park also features a newly upgraded baseball field which citizens have funded and labored to install a new underground sprinkler system, plus new sod and lights, so that the 100+ area players and parents have a game place to call home.
Back in Christoval is the low-water crossing, over 100 years old, built for horses and the earliest automobiles to cross the river just below the dam. Cars still use the low water crossing today with kids often hanging their feet into the water as parents drive slowly, and carefully, across the old water way.
Even while the village of Christoval is being revitalized, there are many other unique places to visit. Among these favorite sites are the Pettitt Building at the North end of Main St. with the new river mosaic and where a 10’ sculpture, “The Artist”, has been installed.
Guests may also visit Christoval Winery where the tasting room is open Thursday-Sunday,
the Concho Christmas Tree Farm and the local monasteries upon request. Personal retreats can be scheduled at either Mt. Carmel Monastery or at Our Lady of Grace Carmelite Monastery located nearby.
And horseback riding along the South Concho River is available for those more adventurous. Christoval also offers dining and shopping, along with hiking in the River Park.
Hummer House is well known and attracts guests who enjoy observing the wildlife habitat year round. The summer months from March thru August guests come to view the hummingbirds.
Lodging is available in a number of B&B cottages and cabins.
